How To Choose The Marketing Channels That Are Right For You

At my last count, there are approximately 43 different marketing channels that you could use to get your business out there.

That’s a LOT.

I suspect there are more being developed as I write this.

And 43 is far more than any reasonable (and sane) business owner could utilise.

And nor should you utilise them all.

Not just for your sanity’s sake.

And not just because there are only so many hours in the day either.

But, even if one of my clients had a never-ending budget to pay an agency to manage all of this for them, I still wouldn’t recommend it.

The reason is that because choosing the correct marketing channels for you and your business is always going to come down to these three elements:

1. Where your target audience is;
2. Which is the right medium for your message, and the creative execution that goes with that;
AND
3. What is right for you personally.

When you are in business for yourself, your marketing has to REFLECT your personality, you have to be AUTHENTIC, and you have to be COMFORTABLE with the media channel that you have chosen.

I think it’s about more than feeling comfortable though: where do your talents lay?

There are four main areas of marketing channel:

Graphic — Audio — Video — Written

(And obviously a combination, but let’s keep it simple ….).

If you have always had the ability to write — then blogging, and anywhere that involves the written word, is going to be great for you. (Check out Medium.com by the way)

Good at speaking, but don’t necessarily want to get yourself “camera ready” all the time (I don’t blame you!)? Then investigate podcasts and, now, Clubhouse.

If you LOVE being on camera then consider TikTok (yes really!), Instagram Reels, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn Lives, and of course, our good friend YouTube.

Lastly — do you have hidden graphic talents? Get yourself good on Canva (although you’ve probably already discovered and mastered it!) and make incredible graphics for your social media posts, your advertising and anywhere else you can make a visual impact.

As I’ve said before, you DON’T need to be everywhere.

But you DO need to be somewhere, and you may as well make those “somewheres” be where you can show yourself in your absolute best light.
